Making tax easier - a Government consultation on changes to the way you deal with Inland Revenue

I do all my Inland Revenue stuff online, but Inland Revenue still send me lots of paper (issue 4/12)

I do all my Inland Revenue stuff online, but Inland Revenue still send me lots of paper.

See current state

All businesses receive paper statements for their tax affairs, whether they file online or send in paper.

View current example

AB Limited files GST returns online. Several days after each return has been filed, AB gets a printed statement in the post. Until then, the only way AB can check its return has been received and if its assessment is correct is to phone Inland Revenue.

What is being proposed

Current tax records for each business will be available through the business’s accounting software.

See proposal

Each business will be able to access its income tax, GST, and PAYE information, including current transaction records, through its accounting software.
This information will also be available on the business’s secure, personalised area in the Inland Revenue website. Paper statements will no longer be sent.

View future example

AB Limited’s accounting software will take care of routine GST obligations, which means that it no longer file separate returns.
AB Limited can regularly check its GST position through its accounting software or in its Inland Revenue secure web page.
