Making tax easier - a Government consultation on changes to the way you deal with Inland Revenue

I'm not sure I can trust Inland Revenue's online services (issue 8/12)

I'm not sure I can trust Inland Revenue's online services.

See current state

Businesses typically need to wait several days to receive paper statements confirming their transactions.

View current example

AB Limited electronically files GST returns every month. A few weeks later, the company gets a paper statement confirming the returns have been received and processed.

What is being proposed

Employers will receive confirmation of their transactions online and through their integrated payroll and accounting software.

See proposal

Accounting software which meets Inland Revenue requirements will send routine tax information directly into Inland Revenue’s computer system via the internet, so businesses won’t need to run a separate electronic tax filing process. The accounting software will also provide confirmation of transactions.

View future example

AB Limited uses accounting software that takes information out of the company’s sales and purchase records, and sends it to Inland Revenue on a monthly basis.
AB can check its GST position through its accounting software and, if it wishes, in its secure page in the Inland Revenue website.
