Making tax easier - a Government consultation on changes to the way you deal with Inland Revenue

It's hard to know if I'm doing the right thing. (issue 3/12)

It’s hard to know if I’m doing the right thing.

See current state

Inland Revenue provides information on paper or through its website. Specific information and confirmation of transactions are sent out by post or by telephone.

View current example

Tracey owns an interior design business and employs two assistants. She manages with her regular Inland Revenue obligations (such as employee deductions and PAYE), but struggles to know what to do when something unusual happens (such as a change in an employee’s personal circumstances), as the information provided by Inland Revenue on its website is too general for her situation.
Tracey either has to ring Inland Revenue or wait for paper statements that confirm her transactions to get an update on her tax situation.

What is being proposed

Faster confirmation of transactions will be available online and through payroll and accounting software.

Web services and general information available on Inland Revenue’s website will be improved, and more tailored information for each employer or business type will be highlighted in their secure personal area.
Payroll and accounting software will be integrated with and populated by Inland Revenue’s systems, and will provide electronic confirmation of transactions.
An overall up-to-date view of employers’ tax situations will be available through their software and in their secure area in the Inland Revenue website.
With more routine transactions made through electronic channels, Inland Revenue will be able to allocate more resources to managing customers’ complex queries.

View future example

Tracey owns an interior design business and employs two assistants. When Tracey logs on to her secure area in the Inland Revenue website, information relevant to her employer and business type is highlighted.
Her payroll and accounting software has been populated with her employees’ tax details through Inland Revenue’s systems, and updates automatically if any employee has changed their personal circumstances in their own secure area in Inland Revenue’s website.
Tracey’s payroll and accounting software and her secure area in the Inland Revenue website will rapidly confirm any transactions and display an up-to-date view of Tracey’s PAYE situation.
