What do you think of having your payroll and accounting software manage your employees' deductions?
The tax system makes too many demands on me and takes me away from running my business (issue 2/12)
The tax system makes too many demands on me.
Employers and businesses are obliged to manage a lot of information, including PAYE, child support and student loan payments, KiwiSaver contributions, payroll– giving contributions and GST. Many of these transactions with Inland Revenue are paper-based.
Tracey owns an interior design business and employs two assistants, Rachel and Steven. Rachel has a student loan and belongs to KiwiSaver, and Steven has a student loan and is liable for child support. As well as completing her GST return and payroll once a month Tracey completes an employer deductions form and an employer monthly schedule (EMS) (IR348) and, when necessary, will update any changes to her employees’ personal circumstances relating to their PAYE.
What is being proposed
Improved and integrated online services and software will reduce interactions with Inland Revenue
Inland Revenue’s systems will be able to populate employer payroll and accounting software that meets Inland Revenue’s requirements, and accept information such as PAYE and GST sent directly from an employer’s software.
Employers and businesses will simply enter transaction information once (such as employees’ gross wages) and this information will be submitted to Inland Revenue. Confirmation of these transactions will be sent electronically and will be immediate in some circumstances.
Employers and businesses will have an up-to-date view of their tax affairs through their software or on their secure area in the Inland Revenue website.
Employees will now manage any changes in their personal circumstances (such as child support) themselves through their secure area in the Inland Revenue website. Information that is relevant to their employment will be filtered through to their employer’s accounting software.
Tracey owns an interior design business and employs two assistants, Rachel and Steven. Rachel has a student loan and belongs to KiwiSaver, and Steven has a student loan and is liable for child support. Tracey completes her entire PAYE obligation by entering her employees’ gross wages into her payroll and accounting software. The software also takes care of her routine GST compliance. Information is sent to Inland Revenue automatically by the software, and confirmation is near-immediate for some of these returns.
Tracey no longer needs to update her employees’ personal details because her accounting software will be automatically updated by Inland Revenue when her employees change their personal circumstances in their individual secure area in the Inland Revenue website.
Tracey can now have an overall view of her current tax position through her software or on her personalised area in the Inland Revenue website.
