I don't like giving my employer details about my personal circumstances (issue 2/8)
I don't like giving my employer details about my personal circumstances.
Individuals must disclose considerable amounts of personal information to their employer (such as whether they are liable for child support, have a student loan, are a KiwiSaver contributor, as well as details of other employment) so their employer can deduct the right amount of PAYE and other obligations from their pay.
Roger is a sales assistant at a fishing and outdoor supplies shop.
Roger is liable for child support for a child he has with a previous partner. Inland Revenue has asked Roger’s employer, Mika, to deduct child support from Roger’s pay as he has fallen behind on his payments.
Roger’s new partner has just had a child. Roger must contact Inland Revenue with his new baby’s details. Inland Revenue will then contact Mika with the new amount to be deducted from Roger’s pay, for his child support payments.
What is being proposed
Individuals will be able to update their personal tax information with Inland Revenue through their secure space on the Inland Revenue website.
Individuals will be able to update their personal information in a personalised and secure area in the Inland Revenue website. This information will be stored in Inland Revenue’s computer system and passed to their employer’s payroll and accounting software.
The payroll and accounting software will then calculate employer deductions, such as income tax and child support, without the employer knowing what these deductions are for.

Roger’s new partner has just had a child. Roger logs into his personalised, secure page in the Inland Revenue website and updates his information, including the birth of his new child, which affects his existing child support obligations.
Roger then receives immediate confirmation in his secure area that his personal circumstances have been updated and that the new details have been filtered through to his employer’s payroll and accounting software. At Roger’s next pay-day, his pay will reflect his new personal circumstances.
