Making tax easier - a Government consultation on changes to the way you deal with Inland Revenue

We don't always get confirmation Inland Revenue has received our returns and payments (issue 3/7)

We don’t always get confirmation that Inland Revenue has received our returns and payments.

See current state

Payments and assessments are shown on printed statements sent out by post some time after transactions are made.
Individual confirmations are not issued for all transactions, and when they are issued they can take some time to arrive.

View current example

Mahi Trust files GST returns every two months, and makes four income tax payments a year.
The trust waits up to seven days after making each payment to get a statement showing payment has been received and the new account balance.

What is being proposed

Faster confirmation of transactions will be available online and through payroll and accounting software.

See proposal

Taxable entities using accounting software that meets Inland Revenue guidelines will be able to access their current tax records through that software and, depending on the software, may get immediate confirmation of transactions.
These entities will also be able to access this updated information in their secure area of the Inland Revenue website.

View future example

Mahi Trust’s accounting software provides information about its GST and income tax liabilities and payments, so staff authorised to access the accounting system can view the records at any time.
The tax accounts are routinely included in the monthly management accounts.
